HOOVER, ALA — Ole Miss’ work in the 2019 SEC Baseball Tournament was rewarded with a regional host site, the NCAA selection committee announced on Sunday night.
Less than an hour after an 11-10 loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament championship game, the Rebels were announced as one of the 16 host sites. It was thought to be down to Ole Miss and Texas A&M for the final of the 16 slots. The Rebels won all four games they played against the Aggies this season, but the hangup was the team’s problematic RPI that swelled into the 20s in part thanks to losses to the likes of Arkansas State and North Alabama and was not aided by six-game losing streak snapped on the last day of the regular season.
The Rebels possessed 20 quadrant one wins, the fourth most in the country. It played the most top RPI top 50 games in the country and had the fourth most top 25 wins in the country. In a season defined by inconsistency, the team was rewarded for a surge in the conference tournament. It is the first SEC team since 2010 to host a regional with an RPI above 14 and just the fourth team since 2002 with an RPI over 20.
Ole Miss will find out its three opponents in the Oxford regional on Monday at 11 A.M.
