JACKSON, Mississippi— If all this cold weather has gotten you and the kids stir crazy, there’s plenty to see around the state this weekend.
If you’re craving a taste of history, starting Saturday, March 7, and running through April is the Annual Natchez Pilgrimage. Historic homes will be open for tours led by costumed hosts and hostesses to give your family a taste of old Southern history and culture. Twenty seven historic homes will hold tours and events as well as local Natchez businesses.
“If you’ve never been to Natchez,” says Lindsey Shelton with the pilgrimage, “now is the time to go.” Ticket and tour information is available on their website.
The beautiful homes and gardens in Natchez may have you thinking about your own garden and yard. If that’s the case, The Gulfport Garden and Patio Show at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center has you covered. Sponsored by the Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association, this event hosts gardening seminars, experts in gardening products, services, outdoor living needs, and yard art. Free parking and a holding area for purchases will be available.
“We’ll also have a kids area,” says Haley Barrett, coordinator of the event. Admission is six bucks and runs Friday 9am-4pm, Saturday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 11am-4pm. Visit their website for more information.
And if the kids are ready to get their hands dirty, they can dig and uncover history for themselves at the 12th Annual Fossil Roadshow at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Kids and adults alike will be able to learn all about Mississippi’s prehistoric past through fossils. The public is urged to bring their fossils in for inspection. The kids will enjoy numerous activities, speakers, as well as their own dig for fossils.
“We’ll have an indoor dig for those who may not enjoy the cold,” says George Phillips, paleontology curator at the museum, “but we’ll have one outside for those who want to brave the cold.”
