JACKSON, Miss. – Vicki Slater announced her bid for the Mississippi Governor’s Office Thursday at the State Capitol. Slater is a 58-year-old attorney form Madison who has her own practice in Jackson. She ran against Congressman Greg Harper in 2012 and is also the first woman to run for the Governor’s office in nearly 30 years since Evelyn Gandy.
During her announcement Slater said that Gov. Phil Bryant and the Republican leadership has “failed Mississippi.” She supports fully funding the Mississippi Adequate Education Program and expanding healthcare for Mississippians.
“There can be no argument that government is morally obligated to keep its citizens safe, educate its children, look out for those who cannot look out for themselves, and be good stewards of the taxpayers’ money. I am running for governor because Phil Bryant has miserably failed to meet those obligations,” said Slater.
Slater has never held a public office before, but Mississippi Democratic Chair Rickey Cole believes that is one of her positive attributes because she is a “fresh new voice in Mississippi politics. She’s not encumber by any of the past problems we’ve had in state government, any of the past division, and she’ll approach it with a fresh eye.”
