JACKSON, Miss.–Common Core will not be completely dropped in Mississippi if the standards are good standards. The plan was debated for more than an hour in the Mississippi Senate Wednesday.
There have been several discussions by lawmakers so far this legislative session about dropping the plan completely, standards which some parents and educators have wanted to see gone for a number of reasons.
“Which way is it? Are they the worst in the nation,” asked Sen. Angela Hill on the Senate floor, “or are they great and comparable to Common Core of similar rigor? Which way is it?”

Hill was questioning statements from the Dept. of Education, one which said Mississippi’s standards are the worst, another that said Mississippi’s Common Core standards are comparable to some of the best.
Her idea to completely kick Common Core to the curb failed. There has been no final decision by lawmakers on how to “get rid” of Common Core. Gov. Bryant and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves have both said numerous times that they would like to see the standards gone.
Some lawmakers want Mississippi to come up with a new set of standards.
