David McGee, the publisher of “The Oxford Eagle”, joined the conversation to give his personal perspective on the ongoing opioid abuse epidemic in the Magnolia State. David has experienced tremendous loss, and a big reason for the pain and suffering his family endured is due to opioid addiction. David’s son William was freshman at Ole Miss in 2008. William ran track for the University, and he lived a relatively typical college freshman lifestyle, with one major difference. William found himself suffering with an addiction to Oxycontin, a extremely powerful opiate used to treat pain for terminal patients. Because of the dose strength of drugs like Oxycontin, it is far too easy for an abuser to take a toxic dose, and after a fight that lasted a few years, William lost his battle with addiction when he overdosed following a concert. You can hear David’s story below.
