After talking about the Blues Trail with Craig Ray from Visit Mississippi, Rebecca wanted to know more about the history of the Blues and how it shaped music into what it is today. Ryno just so happened to know a little bit about the subject, so he broke it down for her (and YOU) as he described the technical aspects of the music theory surrounding Blues basics, like the minor pentatonic scale and the concept of “12 Bar Blues”. Ryno went on to describe how the simple “12 Bar Blues” frame work was simple enough to be used by anyone with a rudimentary understanding of the guitar or piano, and he even showed how Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” was a modified version of that same “12 Bar Blues”. Rebecca asked Ryno about the Blues influencing Country music, and Ryno got a little more philosophical. Country Music and the Blues both pull from real life experiences, and tell stories about love, loss, and hard times, as well as being an occasional celebration of life. After all of that and more, Rebecca walked away humming “Hound Dog” to herself, and Ryno left wanting to spend time just listening to some Muddy Waters and B.B. King.
