JACKSON, Miss. — Nearly 300 Belhaven University students, faculty and staff volunteered at different charitable organizations around Jackson Monday as part of the school’s annual campus wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day.
“Dr. King was all about service, so I’ve been reading a lot of books by him and his wife; and got inspired,” explained grad student Lauran, as she paused from moving chairs at We Will Go Ministries in Jackson Monday morning.
“Serving others was at the core of all that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did in his lifetime and is a significant part of the legacy he has left us. This day is set aside to honor him and help others,” said Belhaven Director of Student Leadership JoBeth Petty Murphree.
We Will Go Ministries was among the six charitable organizations that Belhaven organizers chose to work with during the school’s campus wide MLK Service Day. “I really feel honored that people come out and support the ministry. But also that they catch the vision that as much as we are given, we should give back,” said Ashley Ruffin, a missionary now stationed at We Will Go.
Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. He would have been 86.
