WASHINGTON, D.C.–The U.S. House of Representatives will have to elect a Speaker of the House to lead the 114th Congress. While some Republicans are happy with current Speaker John Boehner, others, who say they identify with more conservative principles, are not. Now a Mississippi group is encouraging the ouster of Boehner as speaker.
That group is the Mississippi Tea Party. A statement late Monday from the Tea Part endorsed Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert for speaker.
The statement also said the group, in which state Sen. Chris McDaniel is a key player, is encouraging Cong. Steven Palazzo (R-4th Dist.) and the state’s three other representatives to vote for Gohmert.
“For too long, Speaker John Boehner has complied with the Obama Administration in undermining U.S. Constitutional principles and the Rule of Law,” read the Tea Party statement.
“We acknowledge that Rep. Louie Gohmert has been active in upholding those principles throughout his service in the U.S. House of Representatives. Now is the time for Mississippi’s GOP delegation to lead by supporting Rep. Gohmert.”
Voting Boehner out would be a longshot. His spokesperson said in a statement he fully expected to be reelected.
