ROSE HILL, Miss.–At least 10 homes were destroyed in Jasper County Saturday as an EF2 tornado blew through the area. There were six tornadoes that were confirmed in Mississippi by National Weather Service survey teams Sunday.
But, survey teams will go out again Monday to investigate the possibility that another tornado may have touched down in Lauderdale County.
Most of the tornadoes that touched down were relatively weak.
“So far we have confirmed three EF1 tornadoes, two EF0 tornadoes and an EF2 tornado,” said Culin. The EF scale rates a tornado for wind speed, based on the kind of destruction and how strong the structures were that were destroyed.
The EF0 and EF1 tornadoes had winds at around 100 mph, or just above that. There were two EF1s in Covington County, one of those near Mt. Olive. There was an EF0 in Lawrence County.
There was also a brief tornado confirmed in Lowndes County, near Caledonia.
WHAT JOANNE CULIN SAID ABOUT SATURDAY’S TORNADOES
As far as the strongest tornado goes, several families are without homes in Jasper County.
“It looks like the storm was at its strongest point when it destroyed five mobile homes and caused extensive tree damage,” said Culin, who was monitoring the severe weather when it passed through.
Fortunately, no one was killed or severely injured. But, Culin said that was lucky, because mobile homes are never safe during tornadoes.
“Mobile homes cannot withstand even some of the weaker tornadoes. So, we urge people, if they do live in a mobile home, find some other place to go to, a friend’s house, a neighbor’s house, somewhere other than a mobile home.
