Alcorn County Puppy Mill Owners Set for Trial

CORINTH, Miss.- The owners of two Alcorn County puppy mills are scheduled for trial on charges of animal cruelty, neglect and abuse.

The Daily Corinthian reports that Larry and Juanita Meeks and Orville and Gloria Greenhaw each pleaded not guilty Tuesday to animal and livestock cruelty, neglect and abuse in connection with the October search and seizure of more than 170 animals.

Police said the animals were living in filthy conditions with no access to clean water or food. Authorities took the animals to multiple locations outside of the county for medical treatment and shelter.

Their charges carry fines, but no jail time. A first time animal cruelty offense in Mississippi is a misdemeanor. The second offense is a felony.

They will appear in justice court Jan. 20.
