JACKSON, Miss.—TeleSouth Communications, Inc., parent company of News Mississippi, is pleased to announce the accomplishment of News Mississippi being awarded Best Newscast for 2014 by the National Association of State Radio Networks (NASRN). The award is for the best regularly scheduled newscast, stressing strong writing, anchoring and use of sound.
The newscast that News Mississippi submitted was from Sept. 8, 2014, and covered the passing of Mississippi State Bulldogs broadcast legend Jack Cristil, a murder in Simpson County, a missing person from the coast, remembering state Sen. Terry Brown, weather and the Miss. Dance Festival at Southern Miss.
“I think this newscast is a fair representation of what News Mississippi does on a daily basis. We cover all parts of Mississippi, communities with small populations, as well as large. We talk about what Mississippi is talking about. We tell the story of our state,” said Chris Davis, News Director for News Mississippi.

Chris Davis was elected president of affiliate and news directors at the association’s annual meeting in Las Vegas this week. As president of the NASRN affiliate and news directors for a two-year term, Davis will be responsible for overseeing the annual meeting, which could be held in Mississippi for the first time in 2015.
“Traditionally, the annual convention is held in the home state of the president. I think it would be a positive for our state to host the radio networks from other states. Not only would we get the opportunity to learn together, the network members would get to see firsthand why Mississippi is a place of stories and rich culture. I have talked with many other news radio stations and they have never visited our state and are interested to see the ‘birthplace of America’s music’,” said Davis.
