GULFPORT, Miss.–A $100 million state-of-the-art aquarium, with a hotel and other entertainment is possibly in the works for the Mississippi coast. The Gulfport city council discussed the possibilities this week.
“We’re envisioning an aquarium, a hotel, and retail space,” Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes told WLOX. “So the sky’s really the limit on this.”
The development depends on the city’s purchase of land along Hwy. 90. The development would be where the First Baptist Church was.
An aquarium of that sized could draw hundreds of thousands of people to Mississippi. That’s the hope of economic developers on the coast. The next step is to secure financing for the land and then to consult with aquarium experts.
