GULFPORT, Miss.–Being a police officer is dangerous work and one of the most dreaded scenarios for any officer happened Sunday morning in Gulfport. A police officer was shot several times as he tried to cuff a man he had chased down.
The shooter was ID’d as 21-year-old Corey Johnson, of Gulfport, who was wanted on several warrants and had just gotten out of jail on bond on drug charges.
WLOX reports that it started when an officer pulled over a car near the Seabees base entrance for a traffic violation. Several people jumped out of the car and took off running.
A backup officer got to the scene and chased down Johnson and was in a scuffle when Johnson was able to take out a pistol and start shooting.
The officer, who was not identified by Chief Leonard Papania, is out of surgery and is stable. Johnson is charged with attempted murder.
