Group Claims Northwest Rankin School District Violated Terms of Lawsuit Settlement

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. – The American Humanist Association claims the Northwest Rankin School District has violated the terms of their lawsuit settlement by allowing Gideons to hand out bibles at Northwest Rankin Elementary School.

The group says the principal, Kara Killough, sent an email to teachers reading “Gideons will set up in the lobby of the fifth grade building at 7:35. Fifth grade teachers — please walk your class through the lobby at that time.”

According to the group, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that government entities are in violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment by aiding Gideons or other groups hand out Bibles.

In 2013 the district was sued by the American Humanist Association over religious assemblies held at Northwest Rankin High School.
