JACKSON, Miss.–Some of you have paid less than $3 for a gallon of regular recently, but if some predictions hold true, you could be doing that on a regular basis in Mississippi for the month of June.
“The U.S. Dept. of Energey is forecasting that overall we’ll see prices this year cheaper than last year,” said AAA of Mississippi Spokesman Don Redmon. “Mind you, this is a forecast that is a fancy word for guess. So far it’s true. This time last year the state-wide average for Mississippi was $3.68. The average right now is $3.27 a gallon.”
Redmon said if the predicition and the current pattern hold true, June is indeed set to be an at or below $3 per gallon month.
“We ended up the month of June last year at $3. It started rising after that, but if we’re gonna be looking at prices cheaper, the hope is that as we get into the early part of the summer that we could see prices below $3 a gallon.”
Redmon credited a number of factors, including refinery activity, but mostly the price of crude oil, which he said should remain in the $90 to $100 per barrel range, allowing for a further price drop.
And, he said, families could use that right now.
“These high prices really destroy the family budget and it would be good for the economy if we just saw cheaper energy prices.”
