WEST POINT, Miss.–The Clay County Grand Jury will have the discretion to add hate crime charges in the assault of Ralph Weems at the Huddle House over the weekend, said a statement from the West Point police. The FBI is assisting in rooting out the truth.
If you haven’t been keeping up, here’s what police say happened. Courtez McMilian, 22, of Okolona, was arrested in the beating of Ralph Weems, who was found in the Huddle House parking lot. Weems and a friend went to eat at Waffle House and may have been warned that it was not safe for white people because they were angry about what happened in Ferguson, Mo.
The two went to Huddle House and may have been followed and that’s when Weems took the beat down.
Police Chief Tim Brinkley said McMillian’s bond was set at $250,000. He was still in jail Tuesday.
“We called in the FBI and they have been fully briefed,” said Brinkley. “Their expertise and resources will prove to be vital in this continuing investigation.”
The Miss. Bureau of Investigation is also helping out, and the district attorney’s office has been briefed, said the chief.
