TUPELO, Miss.–If you’ve got something planned for outside this afternoon, it’s probably a good idea to do it later on in the evening if you live in north Mississippi. A heat advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service and they expect a heat index at 105 to 108 today.
“We’re looking at temperatures in north Mississippi to get into the mid to upper 90s, with dew points in the lower 70s, which will cause the heat index values between 105 to 108 and those can be dangerous,” said John Moore, a meteorologist with the Weather Service.
When he talks about dew points, he’s talking about how humid the air is. The heat index measures how hot it actually feels on your skin.
When the humidity is that high, your body can sweat out all of its hydration pretty quick.
“Take precautions. The outdoor activities, reschedule them for later this evening. Drink plenty of fluids,” said Moore.
He said you can expect it to be warmer by tomorrow and definitely by the weekend, and more of Mississippi will likely have heat advisories.
DeSoto, Marshall, Benton, Tunica, Tate, Coahoma, Quitman, Panola, Lafayette, Union, Pontotoc, Ittawamba, Tallahatchie, Yalobusha, Chickasaw, Calhoun, Monroe and Lee counties are included in today’s advisory.
