LEE COUNTY, Miss.–There’s been another pit bull attack in Mississippi and this time the victim had legitimate business at the house where he was bitten. His injuries were serious and the dogs have been taken from the house.
This one happened in Lee County, near Saltillo, Tuesday afternoon. WTVA reported that a UPS delivery man, Ken Finney, was mauled by two, and possibly a third pit bull. Two of the dogs were taken to the Lee-Tupelo Humane Society, where they are being observed for rabies.
Sheriff Jim Johnson told the TV station that there is no leash law in the county, and that the dogs owner cannot be charged in the attack because it happened on the owner’s property.
He said the owner was cited for not having the dogs vaccinated, and the dogs could be put to sleep in five days if the owner does not get the dogs their proper shots.
Other than that, the sheriff said that’s the extent of what his department can do.
There have been calls for pit bull bans in communities across the state lately after several high-profile attacks, including the attack on Victoria Wilcher, the three-year-old girl who is having reconstructive surgery this week in Florida, following a pit bull attack at her grandfather’s house in Simpson County this spring.
