JACKSON, Miss. -A reading consultant has been sentenced to 30 months in jail for paying bribes to a Greenville Public School District Superintendent.
Edna Goble pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to pay bribes in connection with federal program funds. Investigators said she paid bribes and kickbacks to Harvey Franklin to get him to agree to a contract for reading services between the district and Goble’s company, Teach Them to Read, Inc. Goble was also ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution to the Department of Education. She reports to prison on August 18.
“This is one of the more appalling cases that my office has been involved in since I became State Auditor,” said Stacey Pickering, in a written statement. “Ms Goble and Mr. Franklin worked together to cheat and steal from the students of Greenville, and I am glad both parties are being held accountable for their actions.”
Franklin earlier pled guilty and is currently serving his prison sentence in a federal jail in Alabama.
