JACKSON, Miss.- Election day for the GOP senate race came to an end Tuesday night. Mississippi voters chose a Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, ending one of the state’s hardest fought and most expensive races in decades.
The statewide primary runoff between six-term incumbent Thad Cochran and a tea party-backed challenger, State Senator Chris McDaniel was an extremely close race with numbers going back and forth all night. The election results looked very similar to those that came in June 3, but with McDaniel slightly trailing Cochran most of the night.
Cochran led the race with the final result of 50.9% receiving 189,452 votes to McDaniel’s 49.1% and 182,827 votes. The winner of this primary race wasn’t declared until almost every precinct of the 1,832 precinct’s results were turned in.
Six term Republican incumbent Senator Thad Cochran will now face Democrat Travis Childers for a seat in Washington in November after taking the big win over State Senator Chris McDaniel in the runoff primary election June 24.
