HATTIESBURG, Miss.- A new beer made by a Mississippi brewery can’t be sold in Mississippi.
After months of sitting in a large whiskey barrel, the new brew, Barley Legal, has an alcohol-by-volume level of 11.4 percent, which is too high to legally be sold in state. Mississippi only allows alcohol levels up to 10.2 percent.
Southern Prohibition’s head brewer Ben Green told Hattiesburg American, when he and his fellow brewers set out to try their hand at making barrel-aged barley wine for the first time, they didn’t know what to expect.
While he wishes he could sell it in state and hopes Mississippi will take a look at their alcohol-by-volume laws, in the meantime, Southern Prohibition has a business plan in place with its partners in Louisiana instead.
