EDWARDS, Miss.–It was a deadly weekend for at least two Mississippians on the state’s highways. One crash killed a teenager in Kemper County, while another left former Jackson olice officer Richard Polk dead and a woman hurt. Still another crash left people amazed that no one died.
The wreck that killed Polk happened Saturday afternoon, just after 2 in Edwards, said the Miss. Highway Patrol. Polk was riding a motorcycle, with passenger Della Brumfield on the back when a van turned in front of them. Polk, 49, died at the scene and Brumfield was taken to the hospital.
No charges were filed over the weekend. Polk had recently retired from the police department.
The Kemper County wreck happened about 4:30 Sunday morning on Hwy. 16 near DeKalb when a 2002 Altima ran off the road and flipped. Cardashia Jackson, 18, of Meridian, died. There were three other people in the car, said MHP. One of those passengers was critical.
Another wreck happened Friday when a state trooper stopped to help the driver of a big rig that broke down on Hwy. 98 in Beaumont. According to MHP, the trooper put down orange traffic cones to keep other drivers from hitting the 18-wheeler. The trooper got back in his patrol car.
A black Honda Accord came toward the the sceme and did not slow down. It sideswiped the patrol car, flipped and landed under the 18-wheeler, where tow company repairman was working to fix it.
No one was killed, but the driver of the Accord is critical and the state trooper had to be taken to the hospital.
There was no word on charges or why the driver of the Accord did not slow down when he saw the cones.
