JACKSON, Miss. – U.S Senator Thad Cochran and challenger Chris McDaniel will face off in a June 24 runoff in the Republican Senate primary.
Unofficial results late Wednesday showed that with almost all precincts reporting, McDaniel held a slight lead over Cochran; but neither received a majority to win.
The group, Club for Growth, has backed McDaniel in the race and Wednesday morning called for Cochran to quit without a runoff.
Through a tweet, Cochran said. “These out-of-state groups are trying to buy a Mississippi Senate seat, but Mississippi is not for sale.”
He also tweeted, “I’ve always believed Mississippi is worth fighting for, and that’s what I will continue to do over these next three weeks in this runoff.”
The winner will face Democrat Travis Childers and Reform Party Candidate Shawn O’Hara in the November general election.
