ELLISVILLE, Miss.–It’s just one day until Mississippians go to the polls to decide to decide Republican and Democrat candidates for U.S. Senate. As the deadline for you to make a decision approaches, candidates are getting endorsements and planning last-minute rallies.
The man who holds the Senate seat now, Republican Thad Cochran, had a rally planned for 1 p.m. at the Miss. Ag Museum in Jackson. He was expected to speak, along with others who are endorsing him, like Gov. Phil Bryant and other top state Republican leaders.
Cochran is 76 and has served in the Senate since 1978, a point which supporters say is an advantage because of his seniority. But his opponent, Sen, Chris McDaniel has said that proves he is a career politician and has been in office too long.
McDaniel, a state senator, got endorsements from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former presidential candidate Rick Santorum. Both appeared in Mississippi this weekend to support McDaniel.
“I think it’s prophetic, where we are in this time in history, and Mississippi’s role is being played out,” said Palin at a rally in Ellisville Friday. “It is with arms and valor that we can usher in the change, the arms being the voting box. That’s the arms that we have right now.”
Democrats Travis Childers and Bill Marcy have been playing up recent scandals in the race and the mudslinging from both sides.
“I don’t think it helps anyone. It’s certainly not good for the State of Mississippi,” said Childers in an interview on WAPT-TV. “While those candidates are gonna continue to talk about each other, I’m gonna talk about the State of Mississippi.”
“Right now their race is so contentious, it’s gonna leave somebody mad,” said Marcy, a former Republican. “I think one side or the other is gonna approach us to put our campaign over the top in November.”
Voting starts at 7 a.m. Tuesday, and you have to bring a valid ID to make your choice.
