WASHINGTON, D.C.–It’s a scandal that has affected thousands of America’s veterans, including many in Mississippi. Now some powerful lawmakers are calling for VA head Eric Shinseki to step down. But, not so for the congressman who visited Mississippi.
Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) visited Mississippi last week and spoke to veterans about the problems that are facing at local VAs, with bad sterilization and misdiagnoses under the previous administration, and even some problems that persist under the current one.
But, even though he’s seen the problems first hand, Miller isn’t ready to ask Shinseki to quit.
“Getting rid of Sec. Shinseki is not gonna solve the problem,” he told FOX’s Megan Kelly. “There is a serious systemic problem within the Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs.”
On the other hand, Kentucky Republican Rand Paul says Shenseki shouldn’t remain on the job one second longer. The senator spoke with Sean Hannity Thursday.
“If we’re gonna have waiting lines and people not surviving because of waiting lines, this is precisely what happens in Canada and in England.”
Veterans Affairs Undersecretary for Health Robert Petzel stepped down earlier this week. Some are of the opinion that Shinseki was not responsible for covering up the scandal, but that Petzel was.
