SHANNON, Miss. – A settlement was reached Wednesday in the legal battle for a gay bar in Shannon. Last year the town denied the owner, P.J. Newton, a special exception license for her bar O’Hara’s even though she had operated a bar with the same name and at the same location over a decade ago.
Newton filed a federal lawsuit though the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) against the town saying she was unjustly denied a business license because her bar would cater to the LGBT community.
Just what was in the settlement, they are keeping that under wraps, but attorneys from the SPLC tell the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that both sides are happy about it.
