The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 550 new cases of COVID-19.
Today’s report is a welcomed decrease following Thursday’s 1,092 new cases — by far Mississippi’s largest one-day rise. The state’s total number of cases now rises to 25,066. 1,022 Mississippians have passed away from the virus following today’s confirmation of 6 additional deaths.
The MDSH is reproving 87 active outbreaks in Mississippi long-term care facilities.
The number of hospitalizations remained relatively stable at 533, but Thursday, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas expressed concern for the state’s healthcare system as the department continues to observe widespread community transmission.
“I am absolutely terrified that we are going to overwhelm the healthcare system, not in the fall, which is something that had worried me previously, but now I’m worried about next week or two weeks from now,” Dr. Dobbs said.
Dr. Dobbs and State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers also stressed that a recent surge in cases among Mississippi’s 18-29-year-old population is tied to large gatherings and a lack of adherence to social distancing guidelines.
As of Monday, 17,242 Mississippians had recovered from COVID-19.
