Just one month after six Mississippi counties received a disaster declaration from the White House, federal assistance for homeowners and renters has surpassed $5 million.
By Wednesday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency had approved more than $5.2 million in grants for disaster survivors in Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Neshoba, and Scott counties due to a round of severe weather that pillaged homes and businesses in the counties from April 8-11.
These grants help pay for uninsured and underinsured losses and storm-related damage to eligible homeowners and renters. The total sent to residents in the aforementioned counties includes:
- More than $2.9 million in housing aid to help pay for home repair, home replacement, and rental assistance.
- More than $2.2 million in other needs assistance to help pay for personal property replacement and other serious storm-related needs, such as moving and storage fees, transportation, childcare, as well as medical and dental expenses.
The state of Mississippi and FEMA have staffed and operated five disaster recovery centers and three mobile disaster recovery centers in the six designated counties to provide one-on-one assistance to survivors. The centers tallied more than 1,700 visits.
FEMA personnel have visited more than 8,500 homes and 300 businesses in the impacted counties. Federal employees are continuing to work to ensure that all Mississippi survivors are granted equal access to disaster aid and resources.
Survivors have until August 9 to apply for aid. More information can be found here.
