Transportation officials are reporting that 36 of Mississippi’s 82 counties are still experiencing ice on roads and bridges following this week’s severe winter weather.
At this time, the Mississippi Department of Transportation has released that the primary danger is black ice that may have formed overnight due to freezing temperatures.
The majority of the state still affected by the winter weather is in the central to northern portions of Mississippi, a drastic decrease from the reported 75 counties on Tuesday.
❄️ We’re slowly but surely making it through this weather event!
At 9:30 am (1/19), we’ve had some positive movement: we now only have 36 counties reporting ice on roads & bridges.
Please limit travel to emergencies only in these counties for your safety & that of others! #mswx pic.twitter.com/3sK26Jd4bl

MEMA is warning residents of dropping temperatures anticipated starting Friday night and continuing over the weekend, with wind chills below zero and under 15 degree weather expected for the northern half of the state. As for the coast, wind chills are forecast to be around 15 degrees and lows around 25 degrees.
Frostbite and hypothermia are possible throughout the entire state, as well as danger to exposed pipes and the possibility of main breaks.
Officials encourage the public to consider the following driving tips while traveling on roads and bridges that could be icy:
- Remember, ice will form on bridges and overpasses quicker than on the road
- Slow down. Winter weather conditions can create black ice
- Allow more space between your car and the vehicles around you
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding. Never slam on the brakes
- Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone
