JACKSON, Miss.- Toyota announced a massive recall for faulty breaks in a Prius hybrid model.
In total 340,000 gas-electric hybrid Prius cars manufactured from August 2015 to October 2016 were recalled. 212,000 of them in Japan, 17,000 in Europe and 94,000 in North America.
The defect is in the parking breaks, but the Japanese automaker did not provide a comment on details saying an investigation was ongoing. Toyota did admit to receiving reports of crashes, injuries, and deaths.
The company said that the parking break could disengage unexpectedly which would cause the breaks to stop working and if the car is left in any gear other than park it would potentially roll away and crash.
The vehicles were made at the Tsutsumi plant in Toyota City, Japan. This is also the companies headquarters.
