After false reports that a security guard at a Jackson high school was stabbed on Monday, officials have confirmed that at least two intruders were arrested but no one was injured.
Students, faculty, and staff at Provine High School were placed on lockdown on Monday afternoon. That’s when social media posts ran rampant, suggesting weapons were being used across campus and the guard had been the victim of a stabbing.
Following law enforcement clearing the premises and lifting the lockdown, Provine High School acknowledged the arrests in a statement while quashing rumors of what happened.
“JPS Campus Enforcement, in coordination with local law enforcement agencies, responded quickly to the situation,” the statement reads. “There were at least two individuals taken into custody. We would like to clarify that reports on social media of weapons and a security officer being stabbed are false.”
While names of those arrested or details on why they were on campus have not been released, school officials noted that all students were kept safe.
“The safety of our scholars and staff remains our top priority, and we appreciate the prompt response from all involved,” the statement concluded.
The threat at Provine High School follows a trend of incidents at schools across Mississippi in recent days, including a student in Prentiss pulling a gun on another and a shooting threat in Harrison County.
