WEST POINT, Miss.–He was found with stab wounds shortly after his dad was found dead from a gunshot. But, the victim’s 14-year-old son couldn’t fool police. West Point Police Chief Tim Brinkley said Monday that the son is being charged with murder.
It went down early Friday when 41-year-old Randy Kelly was found dead at his house and the son was nowhere to be found. Several hours later he was found in the woods with what police easily recognized as a self-inflicted stab wound. Police said early on that it looked like a murder-suicide attempt.
The son was taken to UMMC in Jackson and had surgery, but was later released to West Point police.
It was Monday that they charged him.
“Although this young man is being charged as an adult, I think it’s in the best interest of the case not to disclose his location right now,” Chief Brinkley told media. “There are lots of elements of this case that are still under investigation. A juvenile has been charged as an adult but at the end of the day he is still just 14 years old. Because this case has generated so much interest, we want to be sure that media influence doesn’t have the potential to influence the outcome of any of the proceeding before we disclose the facility where he is being held.”
His name was also not released.
Bond was set at $250,000 and police are still asking anyone who knows anything about the case to come forward.
