JACKSON, Miss. — A four-wheeler wreck killed well-known Jackson-area lawyer Precious Martin, and sent his 10-year-old son to the hospital Sunday. Martin was not wearing a helmet.
If you ride an ATV, wearing a helmet is required by Mississippi law, and if you are underage you need to be safety certified before getting behind the handles. However, in Mississippi there is still nothing on the books about driving ATVs on public roads, which happens to be where than more than half of ATV deaths occur. Mississippi has more than 3.5 times more ATV deaths than the national average.
Right now if you do drive an ATV on public roads, odds are you will still get at ticket, but it will be for improper equipment or driving an unregistered vehicle.
