A large sum of unclaimed money is being delivered to victims of tornadoes that struck 25 Mississippi counties two weekends ago.
On Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, a total of 18 twisters touched ground in the Magnolia State, damaging 941 homes, 38 businesses, and 25 farms. Seven people tragically passed away as a result.

In response to the widespread destruction, State Treasurer David McRae pondered what his office could do to help those in need. It dawned on him that the State Treasury’s Unclaimed Money Division could use its money match program to locate victims of the severe weather who were owed money by the government and deliver those funds to them. According to McRae, a total of $1.3 million has been sent by mail to those affected by the tornadoes.

“We did a money match with the victims of the tornadoes. We found people in the counties that were affected, and we were able to send back $1.3 million to the people who were affected by the tornadoes,” McRae said on Mornings with Richard Cross. “They will be getting that [money] by the end of the week to use whatever way they want: for helping them rebuild their homes, clothes on their backs, food, whatever they want or need. This is something state government should be doing.”
